I’m Makeda Aset — intuitive practitioner, shamanic practitioner, trained counsellor, teacher, storyteller and founder of Soul Rebellion.

For more than a decade, my work has lived in the territory where psychology, spirituality, ancestry, and lived human experience meet.

I have worked as a psychic medium and intuitive reader, trained and worked within counselling and transpersonal approaches, explored expressive arts and Gestalt practice, facilitated spiritual development, worked with people experiencing profound periods of change, and spent years studying the ways human beings make meaning from experiences that do not always fit neatly into ordinary language. But Soul Rebellion wasn't born from qualifications alone.

It grew from lived experience. From ancestry. From questions.

From sitting with people.

And from a lifelong fascination with what happens when the psychological, spiritual, cultural, and ancestral parts of ourselves are welcomed and allowed to sit and dine at the same table.

Between Two Worlds

I am a first-generation Australian with South African roots.

That matters to my work. My family history carries migration, cultural complexity, survival, racial history, displacement, resilience and the stories of people who lived across very different worlds. Growing up between inherited South African stories and an Australian life gave me an early awareness that identity is rarely as simple as the boxes we're handed. Families carry things.

Stories. Silences. Beliefs.

Ways of surviving.

Ways of loving.

Ways of fearing.

Ways of understanding the sacred.

Sometimes we know exactly where those things came from. Sometimes we spend half a lifetime discovering them. This eventually became one of the central questions behind my work:

What do we inherit — psychologically, culturally, spiritually and ancestrally — and what are we responsible for doing with that inheritance?

For me, ancestral work is not about romanticising the past. Our ancestors were human beings. They had wisdom and blind spots. Strength and wounds. Traditions and contradictions. Honouring them does not require pretending otherwise. It means learning to stand in relationship with what came before us without allowing the past to unconsciously determine everything that comes next.

Psychology, Spirit & Meaning

My professional training brought another language to questions I had already been asking for years. Through counselling, Gestalt, transpersonal and expressive approaches, I became increasingly interested in how people create meaning — through stories, dreams, symbols, relationships, the body, imagination and spiritual experience. The transpersonal perspective was particularly important because it allowed room for experiences that conventional conversations about psychology can sometimes struggle to hold.

Mystical experience. Synchronicity.

Spiritual emergence. Ancestral experience.

Intuition. Altered states.

Dreams. Ritual.

The experience of encountering something that feels larger than the ordinary self. Human beings have been describing experiences like these for thousands of years. I don't believe our only choices are to dismiss them as meaningless or accept every spiritual interpretation without question. There is a third path: curiosity with discernment. We can honour an experience without rushing to explain it. We can explore symbolism without insisting that everything is literal.

We can take spiritual life seriously while remaining capable of questioning ourselves. For me, that is part of spiritual maturity.

More Than a Decade of Intuitive Work

Long before Soul Rebellion had a name, I was working intuitively with people.

For more than twelve years, I worked as a psychic medium, including work with Psychic TV Australia, alongside private readings and spiritual practice.

Thousands of conversations over the years taught me something important:

People often arrive asking about the future when what they are really asking about is themselves.

Should I stay? Should I leave? Why does this keep happening?

Why do I feel something changing? What am I not seeing?

What belongs to me?

What am I carrying that may never have been mine in the first place?

Divination can provide perspective. Intuition can reveal patterns.

Ritual can create movement.

Spiritual experience can transform the way we understand our lives. But none of these should replace personal responsibility. That understanding changed the way I practised. My work gradually became less interested in simply giving people answers and more interested in helping people develop the discernment to recognise their own.

Shamanic & Ancestral Practice

My work also draws from shamanic, animistic and ancestral ways of understanding relationship. Animism begins with an old proposition:

We live in a world of relationships, not objects.

Land matters. Ancestors matter. The body matters.

Dreams matter. Ritual matters.

The natural world is not simply scenery around the human story.

These ideas are ancient, appearing in different forms across cultures throughout human history. My approach does not attempt to collapse those traditions into one universal system. I am more interested in what they ask of us:

How do we live in relationship? How do we listen?

How do we honour what came before us?

How do we understand our responsibilities to the living world?

And how do we engage spiritual experience without turning it into another performance of identity?

My current practice may incorporate intuitive work, divination, drumming, sound, ritual, energetic work, ancestral exploration and shamanic approaches depending on the person and the nature of the work.

But technique is never the point.

Relationship is.

The Birth of Soul Rebellion

Soul Rebellion emerged after years of watching modern spirituality become increasingly good at selling certainty. There was always another answer.

Another guru. Another manifestation formula. Another identity.

Another person claiming privileged access to what your soul, ancestors, guides or universe supposedly wanted from you.

And somewhere underneath all of that, I kept returning to a much simpler question:

Is your spirituality helping you live?

Can you remain present when life becomes uncomfortable? Can you recognise when intuition has become fear? Can you question a teacher you admire? Can you change your mind? Can you recognise your own projections? Can you listen to ancestral wisdom without becoming imprisoned by the past? Can you encounter mystery without needing to explain every strange thing that happens? Can you take responsibility for the choices that remain yours?

That became the ground beneath Soul Rebellion.

Inner authority. Embodiment. Discernment.
Responsibility.

Not spirituality as escape.

Spirituality as something you live.

Teacher, Counsellor, Practitioner — and Student

One of the principles I carry strongly is that the person sitting in the teacher's chair must remain capable of learning. My background includes training and experience in counselling, Gestalt approaches, transpersonal work and expressive arts, alongside many years of intuitive and spiritual practice.

I have worked with individuals, groups and teams and have held leadership responsibilities outside spiritual practice as well. That ordinary-world experience matters to me. Soul Rebellion isn't interested in spirituality that only functions while candles are burning and everyone is feeling enlightened. Eventually we have to answer emails. Pay bills. Have difficult conversations. Raise families. Set boundaries. Grieve people. Make mistakes.

Go to work. Change direction.

And somehow remain human through all of it. That is where spiritual practice earns its keep. I continue to study, question, and develop my work because I don't believe spiritual maturity has a graduation ceremony.

The more you learn, the more interesting the questions become.
